Perfect Circle / God Speed

Recently, I have been captivated by black and white. I think I’ve probably talked a bit about my love for monochromatic imagery, so I’ll keep this entry short on that note.

The removal of color adds to the suggestion of the abstract, no longer are your eyes preoccupied with hue and color contrast but with light and shadow, texture, and depth. It’s very interesting, like each aspect of the composition adds up to a subjective ‘Where’s Waldo’ of finding the little details and characteristics that make the image so interesting.

This series was a portrait shoot of Domenic Dunegan, the lead singer of Pittsburgh-based rock band The Ghost Club. This is far from the first collabrative engagement between me and Dom and certianly not the last either. The emulation of Kodak Tri-X suggests a certain level of grit and edge, but Dom’s disarming and vulnerable personality suggest a softness and relatability to the surreal. It’s a very fun contrast to play around with, and what is black and white if not a study of contrast?

That’s enough of my ramblings for now, I’ll let the images speak for themselves from here. I have a few shots on 6x7 film that should come back from the lab sooner rather than later, so keep your eyes out for that!

Until next week.
