Angkor, Cambodia
The ancient city of Angkor, located just 4 miles (6km) north of the modern city Siem Reap, is much more than the famous temple Angkor Wat. The remains of the city boast 72 different temples, an assortment of bridges and archways for each entry and exit, statues and depictions of Khmer legends, and numerous other architectural marvels.
Once the capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th centuries, it is now a well preserved archaeological site providing insight to an early advanced human civilization. The sprawling religious complex of Angkor Wat, itself, comprises more than a thousand buildings, and is one of the great cultural wonders of the world.
