With Soul

This week, I would like to share with you all a side of my life that has become very dominant over the last several months. In addition to having great passion for photography and camerawork, I have also found great inspiration in mixology. I love the history, the cultural touchstones, the flavors, recipes, experiments, colors, flavors; you name it, I probably get pretty excited about it.

Because of that excitement, I like to split my time between cameras and shaker tins fairly often. I work at a Jazz Club in Pittsburgh, PA known as “Con Alma.” It’s a relatively new establishment that has very quickly cemented itself as a staple in the city, not just for its food and drink, but its nightly music and overall ambiance.

Now, a job is a job, and even the most fun ones still have their moments. That being said, I try and bring a camera along with me every now and again to capture the little vignettes of the other side of my life, whether that be the musicians I hear, the drinks I make, or the people I work with.

An interesting thing about this set of pictures for all you camera nerds out there is the grain level. In proper jazz club fashion, most of the bar is very very dark. Grain doesn’t bother me, in fact I love the texture that comes out of the different light ratios. Being a Fuji Shooter also helps out with bringing a little more punch in the contrast by using a lot of the visual options with the built-in film simultations. The photos below are all taken as JPEGs using my own recipe for Kodak’s Ektar 100 stock.

I hope you enjoy this peek into my other life, until next Wednesday!
