White Gloves

Hello and happy Wednesday to everyone!

I am very excited to share this set with you all, the process taking them and editing thru them all ended up having a lot more of a dedicated procedure than I usually adhere to and this experiement has left me with lots to think about.

Lately I’ve been trying to educate myself on the careers of established photographers preceding me. Notably I’ve been following through the portfolios of Andy Gotts and Mark Seliger of late. I am fascinated by the level of patience and confidence explored by Gotts and the varieties of expression explored by Seliger. So, keeping these things in mind, I went out on this shoot trying to see if I could borrow some of these strategies for myself.

Andy Gotts is known for employing a very humanistic approach to photography, taking the time to talk with and understand his subject before releasing the shutter. I love the patience he employs, the dedication to the subject first and foremost and the confidence in his own voice as an artist to be able to display it so effortlessly. Going into this shoot I wanted to be sure I took some time to speak with my subject, Sami, to learn about her voice and her ideals as a person and to try and maintain that sense of individuality in the images we would make together.

During the shoot, I tried to keep my headspace on Mark Seliger too. I am so intrigued by his poses and angles, he finds such a way to take an image that might otherwise feel mundane and make it speak volumes. I made an attempt on this shoot to focus on what about each image made it ‘striking.’ I think a lot of these elements come through, especially after some minor color tweaks in post.

I ‘m sure I will likely take some bits and pieces from each of these artists going forward. So often with digital photography it is tempting to take advantage of the seemingly endless storage available on a given shoot, but confinining the process I think gives way to a more creative result.

With that, here is a bird’s eye view of what Sami and I created together. I do hope you all enjoy it!

Until next week, -N
